Implantology and dental implants

Implant dentistry is increasingly becoming one of the most recommended by dentists and most preferred by patients means to restore one or several missing teeth. Although a relatively young discipline, it is developing at a cosmic pace. Combined with modern technology and physician talent, implant dentistry is increasingly replacing traditional bridges and dentures to become their better, more reliable, more comfortable, longer lasting and more aesthetic alternative.

The first attempts at implant treatment date back to the dawn of the 20th century, but their intensive penetration and development began in the 1980s.

What is the concept of implantology?

Implantology deals with the restoration of missing teeth through dental implants, which are surgically placed into the jawbone and thus replace both the lost teeth and their roots.

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium screws that are inserted into the jawbone, integrate into it and remain fixed there, mimicking the root of the lost tooth. By means of an additional superstructure, the implant becomes a base on which a crown, bridge or denture is placed.

What material are implants made of?

Most often – from high-quality titanium alloy, less often – from zirconium. Titanium is the material of choice for implantologists as it combines exceptional lightness, strength and hardness.

When is implantology the solution to the dental problem?

Implant dentistry comes into play when one, several or all teeth are lost. It is only necessary that the patient is of age, because the development of the jaw must be complete.

How long does the procedure take?

There are four types of implants and your dentist will decide which is best for you:

Medical Dent

Standard implant placement

It is most commonly used when a tooth needs to be extracted and replaced with an implant. Surgery is then performed about six months after the tooth extraction to allow the bone and the gum to recover. The procedure is thus quick and the recovery period is short.

Delayed implant placement

It can be early or late. If there is enough bone, the implant can be placed about 20-25 days after tooth extraction. Late implantation requires waiting longer for the tissues around the extracted tooth to heal.

Immediate implant placement

Immediate translated means “immediately”. Immediate implantation usually goes with immediate loading with crowns or a bridge. It is the quickest and most comfortable for the patient, but requires caution and avoidance of solid food for a period of time after treatment. It is most commonly used in the restoration of completely edentulous jaws – when four implants are placed and a fixed prosthesis is placed over them. Another suitable case for immediate implantation is in case of broken single teeth, when there is no infection in the bone and the surgery can start immediately.

Advantages and Features

What are the advantages of implantology?

Implant restorations are superior to bridges and dentures in every way. Here’s what they save you from:

Stages of Treatment

How does an implant treatment work?

1. Examination and treatment plan

First, the implant dentist will perform a thorough examination to determine the condition of the bone and gums, as well as the overall oral health of the patient. On the basis of this examination, he will be able to draw up a treatment plan with which you will be familiar in detail. It includes eventual treatment of the gums and bone, if necessary. Refinement of where the implant will be placed. As well as planning the timing of its loading with the prosthetic structure – crown, bridge or fixed prosthesis.

2. Surgical stage

If teeth need to be extracted, this extraction will proceed first and a recovery period will be waited for. Only after that the implantation is performed in the operating room with local anaesthesia. If the patient wishes and there are no contraindications, anaesthesia can be full.

3. Recovery

If an immediate implant and loading approach is not chosen, the patient must wait for the implantologist’s recommended period of time for the dental implant to osseointegrate and the surrounding tissues to heal. Depending on the patient’s condition, this period varies between 8 and 24 weeks. The insertion procedure itself is painless. You may feel pain after the operation that goes away after taking a simple painkiller.

4. Placing a crown

A special superstructure is placed on the implant, which is already integrated into the bone, and acts as a base for the future tooth. It is on it that the crown previously made in a laboratory is placed.

Risks and Complications

Is there a risk of complications?

There is a myth that it is possible for a patient’s body to reject the “foreign body”. There is no such thing. Implantology is the result of an excellent symbiosis between the skill of the doctor and the care provided by the patient. This outcome is successful in over 98% of cases.

Only 2% worldwide are cases of lost implants that had to be reinserted. Most often, this is due to an infection that occurred during or after the operation – in case of insufficient hygiene care on the part of the patient.

There is an increased risk of potential complications in patients who are avid smokers, as nicotine has been shown to reduce blood supply, which is key to successful tissue repair.

Finalizing the Treatment

What implants to choose?

A wide variety of dental implants are currently available on the market. Driven by the desire to offer their patients more attractive prices, many dental clinics are opting for lower-end options. At Medical Dent, however, we believe that cheaper is always more expensive. That’s why we work with high-quality American implants that have a lifetime warranty. They are one more reason why we can guarantee a successful treatment outcome for our patients.

We also have no hesitation in answering the question “Screw or basal implants?”

At Medical Dent, we work with screw dental implants because their concept has proven to be more reliable and safer for patients – both through our experience and the world’s.

Results and Care

Is there any specific care that needs to be taken after a dental implant?

Good oral hygiene is a must for healthy teeth, no matter if they are natural or implanted.

They should be brushed at least twice a day with a brush and paste, and the spaces between them should be cleaned with a floss or interdental brush. Rinsing with mouthwash is an additional protection against bacteria.

Patients should have regular checkups at the dental office for professional cleanings. At these visits, the implantologist will monitor your condition.

Why is Medical Dent the right choice for implant treatment?

Dental Clinic Medical Dent is the first specialized clinic for implantology not only in Sofia, but also in Bulgaria. We saw and understood the prospects for this segment of dentistry nearly two decades ago when we decided to structure our clinic with a focus on implantology.

Over the past years, in cooperation with many dental practices in the country, we have “exported” our expertise outside Sofia to provide quality treatment for patients in smaller towns.
That’s why today we are proud of a rich “portfolio” of patients whose smiles we have restored with the help of dental implantology, our experienced specialists, high-quality materials and the latest generation digital technologies that we work with.
So we can state – perhaps immodestly, but quite honestly – that in the search for truly quality implant dentistry, Dental Clinic Medical Dent is not just a good choice. It is the only choice.
